Overview
SeaWulf Desktop provides a full Linux desktop environment running on SeaWulf compute nodes. Interact with the cluster through a graphical interface, run GUI applications, and manage files and terminals — all in a web browser. For some GUI tools it outperforms X11 forwarding.
Getting started
- Open the OnDemand portal at
sn-ood.seawulf.stonybrook.eduand authenticate with NetID + DUO - Launch via the SeaWulf Desktop icon or Interactive Apps
Session configuration
| Setting | Guidance |

| Queue | Pick for your computational needs (e.g. short-40core-shared) |
| Desktop environment | XFCE, GNOME, or other available options |
| Duration | How long the session should run |
| Node count | Default to 1 unless running parallel computations |
| Notifications | Optional email alert when the session starts |
Tip: Request only the resources you need — more resources may increase queue times.
Launching and running
After clicking Launch, the session progresses Queued → Starting → Running, then opens the full desktop in a new browser tab. Authenticate with your NetID password if prompted.
Sharing and terminal access
Use the shareable link to allow view-only access for other SeaWulf users. Open terminals from the bottom taskbar icon or the Applications menu.
Ending a session
Close the desktop tab, return to the session status page, click Delete, and confirm — this releases the cluster resources.
