Using modules

Overview

The clusters use the module system to manage software. Modules let you load and unload different packages and versions without modifying your environment manually.

Essential commands

module avail                  # see all available modules
module load python/3.11.2     # load a module
module unload python/3.11.2   # unload a module
module list                   # list currently loaded modules
module purge                  # unload everything

Finding and inspecting modules

module avail python           # search for Python modules
module show python/3.11.2     # see what a module changes

Node architecture matters

Software availability varies by hardware. SeaWulf includes four architectures:

• 28-core Intel Haswell
• 40-core Intel Skylake
• 96-core AMD EPYC Milan
• 96-core Intel Sapphire Rapids

Certain software versions run exclusively on particular architectures — if a load fails, verify your target node type.
