Overview

RStudio Server provides a browser-based RStudio that develops and runs R scripts directly on compute nodes โ€” data analysis, visualization, and modeling with no local installation, plus an integrated terminal.

Getting started

  1. Open the OnDemand portal and authenticate with NetID + DUO
  2. Launch via the RStudio Server icon or Interactive Apps โ†’ RStudio Server
  3. Configure: queue (e.g. short-40core-shared), 1โ€“4 cores for light work, time limit, memory, and R version
  4. Click Launch; when Running, click Connect to RStudio

Using RStudio Server

  • Write and run R scripts in the editor pane; use the console for interactive commands
  • Visualize data in plots; inspect the environment panel
  • Browse home, scratch, or project directories from the file browser
  • Use the integrated terminal for shell commands or job management
  • Install packages with install.packages()

Files and collaboration

ln -s /gpfs/scratch/NetID /gpfs/home/NetID

Git integration enables repository cloning and version management. Note that unlike MATLAB, RStudio sessions do not offer shareable links โ€” use Git or shared directories for collaboration.

Best practice: Save work frequently to home or project directories, monitor memory during heavy computations, and close idle sessions to free resources.
