Overview
Code Server is a web-based Visual Studio Code, enabling remote development on the clusters through your browser — a lightweight, interactive development environment without installing VS Code locally.
Getting started
- Open the OnDemand portal and authenticate with NetID + DUO
- Launch via the Code Server icon or Interactive Apps → Code Server
- Configure: queue (e.g.
short-40core-shared), 1 core for editing (more for compiling/testing), time limit, 1 node - Click Launch; connect when Running
Using Code Server
- Open and edit files across home, scratch, and project directories with the file explorer
- The integrated terminal compiles code and runs scripts exactly like an SSH session
- Some VS Code extensions are compatible — install selectively
- Configure shell profiles, Python virtual environments, and language tools as usual
Reminder: Save your work frequently in home or project directories to avoid data loss, and close unused sessions to preserve cluster resources.
Collaboration
Sessions are private with no shareable links — use Git or shared directories for team development.
