Accessing project space via CIFS

The CIFS/SMB protocol lets you open your project space like a normal network folder from your own computer. The gateway server is rpx-gtwy.seawulf.stonybrook.edu. You must be on the Stony Brook campus network — from off campus, connect to the university VPN first.

Windows

1. Confirm you are connected to the campus network (or VPN).
2. Open File Explorer and enter \\rpx-gtwy.seawulf.stonybrook.edu in the address bar.
3. Double-click your project space directory to browse files.
4. For a persistent drive: right-click Network in the sidebar → Map network drive → pick a drive letter, enter the server path, and click Finish.
5. To disconnect, right-click the mapped drive and choose Disconnect.

macOS

1. Confirm you are connected to the campus network (or VPN).
2. In Finder, choose Go → Connect to Server.
3. Enter smb://rpx-gtwy.seawulf.stonybrook.edu/<project-name>.
4. The volume appears in Finder under Locations.
5. To mount automatically at startup: System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → click + and select the RPX volume. Remove it with −.

Linux

1. Confirm campus network (or VPN) and root/sudo access, then install samba-client and cifs-utils.
2. Optionally list the project spaces you can access:

smbclient -L rpx-gtwy.seawulf.stonybrook.edu -W sunysb.edu -U <NetID>

3. Create a mount point and mount the project space:

mkdir ~/hpc_support
sudo mount -t cifs -o domain=sunysb.edu,username=<NetID>,uid=$(id -u),gid=$(id -g) //rpx-gtwy.seawulf.stonybrook.edu/<project-name> ~/<mount-point>

4. Enter your local machine password, then your NetID password. Your files appear at the mount point.
5. Unmount when done (add -l if the target is busy):

sudo umount ~/<mount-point>/

Off-campus access via VPN

Connect to the Stony Brook University VPN, then follow the steps for your operating system. When prompted for credentials use:

• Name: sunysb.edu\<NetID>
• Password: your NetID password
