Note: Project spaces provide shared storage for research groups and collaborative projects. They are managed by a group’s PI and are not backed up.
Overview
A PI can request a project space to share data with their research group. For example, the “Smith Project” space would be located at:
/gpfs/projects/SmithGroup
By default, each project space is allocated 1 TB of storage. This space is not backed up, and responsibility for data integrity and backups rests with the users.
Requesting Space
PIs can request up to 10 TB of space either during the initial project request or later through the ticketing system. Requests should include:
- The size of the data, or total space requested.
- How the space will be used and processed, including access frequency and bandwidth needs.
- The duration of storage needed. Project space is not intended for long term archival storage.
- Confirmation that the PI and users understand the space is not backed up and that maintaining backups is their responsibility.
Requests for more than 10 TB require detailed justification and, if approved, may only be granted for a limited period of time.
Best Practices
- Use project space for shared datasets, workflows, and results needed across a group.
- Avoid using project space for archival storage. Move long term data to another system.
- Maintain independent backups, since project space is not backed up by SeaWulf.
- Coordinate with your PI for access permissions and quota requests.
