REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a versatile, secure, locally hosted, and mostly self-service web application that enables users to quickly build and deploy data collection projects and surveys. It is designed to be able to support a variety of data capture strategies, workflows, and compliance requirements, including HIPAA.
Although primarily geared toward research studies, REDCap may also be used to support quality improvement (QA/QI) and operational projects that have been sanctioned by the appropriate office or regulatory body. For more on appropriate use, please review our getting started, access guide, and move to production pages.
The application is licensed to Stony Brook University under a consortium agreement with Vanderbilt University. For more information on the REDCap consortium, visit https://projectredcap.org.
On East Campus, anyone with an SBM domain account can log in and begin using the application immediately. On West Campus, request an SBM domain account from the RCI Team.
User also need to “Move Project to Production” before they start data collection. They may also request additional features such as API, SMS, and external user onboarding subject to an approval and onboarding process given the higher risk profiles of these features.
Dr. Nguyen in Pediatrics would like to send weekly surveys to participants for his research study to track participant symptoms and side effects. Rather than Google Forms, SurveyMonkey or Qualtrics, REDCap is suggested for stronger compliance and alignment with local IRB requirements. REDCap offers robust survey functionalities, including the ability to tie separate surveys to a single participant record.
