FAQs

What is TriNetX?

TriNetX (TNX) is a research network combining Stony Brook’s Electronic Medical Record data with the data of over 170 other Health Institutions. Researchers can use TriNetX to query either Stony Brook’s data alone, or in combination with other provider data via the other research networks.

How do I access TriNetX?

Request an account using your primary Stony Brook email address. Once the account is granted, go to live.trinetx.com and enter your email address as your user name. Continue sign in with either your UHMC or NetID account. If you still cannot access TriNetX after 2 business days, please email Melanie.Keister@stonybrookmedicine.edu for assistance.

How do I use TriNetX?

To begin your TriNetX training, log in to TNX and access online training by clicking the question mark “?” in the upper right of your TriNetX screen. The “Training Center” hosts video tutorials. You may also view the Learning Center of this site for Tip Sheets and other helpful resources.

Departmental or group training can be arranged by contacting Melanie.Keister@stonybrookmedicine.edu for assistance.

How far back does the data go?

Stony Brook’s TriNetX data goes back to 01 January 2014. The data from the other institutions typically goes back 7 years, but some go back as far as 13 years.

Can data be exported out of TriNetX? I want to have a dataset for my query.

Three of the available TriNetX networks allow dataset downloads: the Research Network, the Linked Network, and the Stony Brook University Network. Click “Request Dataset” within your study, and an email will be sent to SBM internal TriNetX support of your request. You are required to have an IRB-approved Exempt protocol with a submitted Limited Dataset Form to receive Stony Brook patient data. The Research or Linked Network datasets do not require an IRB. Stony Brook-only data can be received typically within 3 days. Datasets from the larger Research Network will be requested from TriNetX by SBM internal support, and will take at least three weeks to receive.

Be aware that you can perform some in-platform data analysis on your defined cohort without downloading data from the platform, which is often preferable. You may also request the MRNs of the SBM patients in your cohort for study recruitment or chart review.

What data is searchable?

Our overview page on TriNetX includes a list of data available through the platform, as well a list of data that is not available. Once you have an account, you can access the Data Dictionaries.

How does TriNetX determine age within the tool?

Age is determined by the patient’s date of birth. It is not related to the diagnosis, procedures, etc., that are selected within the query. However, you can set Age at Event for items in your query. As an example, you can ask for patients who have had a myocardial infarction at age 50 or younger. You can also ask for patients who are within a certain age range on this day - important for study recruitment.

How often is data refreshed in TriNetX?

Our Stony Brook data is refreshed once a week. Keep that in mind when creating your queries. Your data may be as fresh as one day, or up to 7 days old.

Am I able to use the data and/or screenshots in grant proposals?

Yes, you are allowed to use any of the information you find in this tool. You can download editable reports from any in-platform analytics you perform to support your proposal.

What are the list of current institutions that are in the whole TriNetX network?

TriNetX is not currently providing a full list of institutions that are in their network for privacy reasons.

Can I publish the research I perform in TriNetX?

Yes! TriNetX provides these Publication Guidelines. Be aware that many publication entities require that you have received a determination from the SBU IRB that your research is Not Human Subjects Research, even when you are not using Stony Brook University Network datasets. You will want to verify if that is needed.
