Requesting Accounts & Project Numbers
Access to SeaWulf high-performance computing resources
Important: Only Stony Brook University faculty and Brookhaven National Lab staff can request new projects. Collaborators should instead request an account under an existing project allocation.
SeaWulf accounts provide collaborators access to the cluster. All accounts are linked to both a user's NetID and a project number.
Requesting an Account
Accounts may be created for all collaborators under an existing project allocation. To request an account:
Gather Information
Collect your NetID, the Project's Principal Investigator (PI), and the Project Number.
Submit Request
Submit a ticket to the IACS ticketing system with this information.
External collaborators: If you do not have a NetID, your PI must complete the volunteer affiliation form and email it to Sarena Romano. Once your NetID has been created, you can submit your account request through the IACS ticketing system.
Requesting a Project
To establish a new project allocation, submit a single-page PDF request via the IACS ticketing system.
Eligibility
- Stony Brook University faculty
- Brookhaven National Lab staff
- New York State companies
All requests undergo committee review. Approved submissions will receive a project number by email.
Submission Requirements
Your single-page PDF request must include all of the following components:
Usage Description
Brief justification of the project or course, including research objectives and computational needs.
Computational Resources
Provide estimates for:
- CPU/GPU hours required
- RAM requirements
- Number of nodes needed
- Expected job duration
Software Requirements
List any software packages your project requires. All installation requests must be submitted through the IACS ticketing system, but including them in your project request helps reduce setup time.
User Accounts
Provide the full name and NetID of each collaborator who will need access to the project.
Disk Space Requirements
Default Allocations:
- Home Directory: 20 GB (backed up, permanent)
- Scratch Directory: 20 TB (not backed up, 30-day purge)
Note: These default sizes cannot be changed.
If your group requires additional long-term shared storage, the PI must request a project space. See Requesting Storage on SeaWulf for detailed instructions.
After Submission
Once your project request is submitted:
- The request will undergo committee review
- You will receive email notification of the decision
- Approved projects receive a unique project number
- Use this project number for all future account requests and resource allocations
